Moats by industry

Each group is scored with the template built for its economics. What counts as a moat for a bank — deposits that do not chase rate — is not what counts for a REIT or a software vendor, so the defenses and their weights differ by group.

How moat scoring works

What is a moat score?

A moat score rates how well a company can defend its profits from competitors, on a scale of 0 to 100. StatsAlpha computes one for 6,106 companies from reported financials — there is no analyst opinion in it. Each score is a weighted composite of six competitive defenses, every one of them measured as a percentile against comparable companies rather than against an absolute threshold.

How are moat scores calculated?

Companies are scored with one of 8 industry-specific templates, because the defenses that matter to a bank are not the ones that matter to a software company. Each template defines six defenses and how much each one weighs; each defense combines several financial signals drawn from the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement. Scores are refreshed weekly.

Which companies have the widest moats?

The leaderboard on this page ranks the highest-scoring companies across all 11 industry groups, and each industry page ranks its own. Because scores are percentile-based within an industry, comparing across industries compares two companies' standing among their own peers rather than their raw financials.

Is a high moat score a reason to buy the stock?

No. A moat score describes the business, not the price. It measures whether a company has the financial signature of a durable advantage — pricing power, cost advantage, customer stickiness — and says nothing about whether that advantage is already reflected in what the shares cost. It is a screen, not a recommendation.
